GM: 1,000 hydrogen cars in California by 2014
It's not exactly the tidal wave of zero-emissions vehicles that we'd like to see taking over the roadways, but it's a start. GM is launching an effort to get at least 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on California's highways by 2014 -- which should go a long way towards achieving the state's goal of having 7,500 zero-emissions cars on its roads in the next 6 years. For prospective hydrogen drivers, the biggest question has to be: where do you fill up?If you haven't noticed, there aren't a lot of hydrogen stations under construction, but that may change. Current plans only call for 25 hydrogen refueling stations in California, but GM and others are backing a new plan to put 40 in the LA area. Still this is woefully short of the gajillion gas station that people are used to, but you've got to start somewhere.
GM is hoping that, by getting a thousand fuel cells on the road, they can gather better statistics on how well the green machines are working. Once questions about durability and maintenance have been answered, it's expected that a wider range of less daring consumers might jump on board hydrogen bandwagon. Until then, it'll probably be celebs like Jason Bateman who get to play with the technology.
