PETA vs. Dita: Von Teese eats foie gras
Dancer and former Mrs. Marylin Manson -- Dita Von Teese -- teamed up with PETA last year to promote its spay and neuter campaign for companion animals. The fear wearing, non-vegetarian model made strange bedfellows with the hard-line animal rights organization, but hey most everything they do causes some kind of uproar. Now, after the rising star revealed to reporters that she likes to dine on the controversial French delicacy foie gras -- fattened duck livers -- when she visits Paris, PETA is no longer holding back when it comes to the former ally.
Many animal rights types heaped criticism at Dita for not changing her ways after working with PETA on the ABC Campaign, but seriously, what did they expect? Once Von Teese told reporters from The New York Times that "My guilty pleasure is eating foie gras in Paris. I feel guilty and horrible about it." The gloves came off. PETA director Michael McGraw fired off a statement saying:
"We were aware that Dita is not a vegetarian before working with her, and she has brought much needed attention to an important PETA campaign promoting spaying and neutering of companion animals. At least Dita expressed remorse for enjoying the force-fed duck delicacy of despair. I know that PETA has to satisfy its base and all, but it seems like this is kind of an example of the divide between moderate animal rights types and the activists. Is it impossible for PETA to successfully cooperate with meat-eaters? Maybe there needs to be a Peta Lite.
But foie gras entails some of the cruelest factory farming abuses, which is why most people choose not to eat it. Foie gras is made from the grotesquely enlarged livers of ducks and geese who are cruelly force-fed by pipes that are shoved down their throats every day, pumping up to four pounds of grain and fat into their stomachs. We hope that Dita does the right thing and eliminates foie gras from her diet."
