Zero Motorcycles offers electric dirt bike
Imagine yourself on a dirt bike, tearing up the local dirt track while you listen to the wind rushing your helmet, your tires gripping the dirt, and that's about it -- you might even be able to listen to your iPod. It's a surreal scenario for any dirt biker that has grown up around the dirty and high-pitched squeal of a 2-cycle engine. Dirt biking's noise-free future is becoming a reality through the progress of companies like Zero Motorcycles, who are quickly developing lineups of quiet and pollution free battery-powered ATVs. Zero is already taking orders for its first high-powered electric dirt bike, the 'Zero X.' According to test riders, this bike can hold it's own with the combustion engines that dominate the sport. Engineers claim that the Zero X is in a class all its own when it comes to electric bikes, because it's powered by the longer lasting and more powerful Lithium-ion battery. It can supposedly keep trucking for 2 hours without losing any performance.
Neal Saiki -- founder of Zero bikes -- designed the bike to address the concerns that were slowly turning riders off to the sport. According to him:
"Local motorcycle and backyard tracks are being closed because of the noise and pollution made by gasoline engines. I built the Zero X to enjoy off- road riding without the loud engine noise. At first customers are interested in our motorcycle because it's silent and clean. After a test ride, they are amazed with the extraordinary power and torque that is packed in the lightweight battery unit."With quiet and pollution free motorcycles on the market, Saiki hopes that two-wheeling could once again appeal to a wider range of outdoor types. As a mountain biker himself, Saiki hope that his motorcycle will attract mountain bikers who like the idea of a quieter and more eco-friendly approach to attacking the mountain.
