Update on UNICEF's Tap Project
Remember when we told you about UNICEF's Tap Project? (To get a refresher, go here and here). On March 22, World Water Day, patrons who dined out at many of New York City's restaurants opted to pay $1 for their tap water, and the money raised - $100,000 - provided a day's worth of clean water to 4 million children.
Due to the positive outcome, the Tap Project will now occur yearly, and 30 additional cities are rolling out their own projects this year. In addition, New York residents can contribute to the project directly on their water bills. And next year, UNICEF claims that over 100 cities worldwide will participate.
Obviously, UNICEF's big name didn't hurt in garnering big-time media attention for the project. But it's a great example of how the media can be used as a positive, powerful vehicle for change. Now let's hope that everyone keeps drinking tap water.
