Water bottle recall: Made for children Made in China

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall notice for Backyard and Beyond metal water bottles.

Made in China and sold from February 2006 through February 2008, the surface paint on the metal water bottles have been found to contain excessive levels of lead. Designed for children, consumers are instructed to stop using the product immediately. The recalled water bottles can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.

Why is exposure to excessive lead levels a danger?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), "Lead is a highly toxic metal that was used for many years in products found in and around our homes. Lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. Children 6 years old and under are most at risk, because their bodies are growing quickly."

According to the CPSC, the Backyard and Beyond metal water bottles in the recall have model numbers 67402, 67404, 67442, 67444, 67742, 60442, 67744, 67746, 67748 and 60448 printed on the hang tag. The water bottles have a black plastic sip-top and were sold in green, pink or blue with assorted animal or insect graphics on the exterior.
