Earth Hour: Molson Coors gets on board

Yet another big-name sponsor has signed on to participate in the WWF's Earth Hour. Molson Coors Brewing Company -- based in Denver, CO -- has pledged to turn off all non-essential lights from 8-9PM, this coming Saturday to show their support for the environmental movement. Along with the headquarters in Denver, the Coors brewery in Golden, CO will be tapping the rockies in virtual darkness for 1 hour -- except for the mandatory safety lights of course. In Canada and the UK, all Molson Coors breweries will be turning off their outdoor lighting and signage.

It's kind of a nice to know that it's not just the organic micro-breweries that will be observing Earth Hour. Especially since changes instituted at mega-corporations can have a much greater impact than those of Joe's Local Brewpub.

In fact, Molson Coors is one of the world's largest brewers, and they've worked to maintain a pretty eco-friendly image throughout the years. They don't use biogas to power their brewery or anything like that, but they have pledged to lower their greenhouse emissions by an indexed 12% by 2010. From the article:
"Environmental stewardship is part of our overall corporate responsibility commitment and that commitment is integral to how we do business. It drives our participation in initiatives like this and it is why we're also encouraging our employees and their families to observe Earth Hour to help reduce energy consumption at home."
The World Wildlife Fund is estimating that 30 million people will be turning the light off for Earth Hour. That's a pretty significant number -- especially considering that this will be the first year that it will be observed outside of Sydney.
