Seventh Generation toilet paper vs. sandpaper
On a recent shopping trip to Whole Foods, I was in need of toilet paper and decided to fork over the extra two dollars to buy Seventh Generation's 100% recycled bathroom tissue. I usually buy popular commercial brands with either puppies or bears on the package. However, toilet paper has such a specific use and I saw no reason why I should be using virgin timber on my derriere when there were plenty of other options available.Let me just say that I am no delicate flower. In fact, I laughed at Larry David's plight during last season when he had a problem with his TV wife buying eco-friendly toilet paper and whined incessantly about the texture. Now, I understand just how unfortunate "scratchy" toilet paper can be and I will happy when I finish the last of these rolls!
What's your take on eco-friendly toilet paper? Is chlorine free good enough for you or do you go with 100% recycled? Have you found a brand that goes easy on your "sensitive areas?"

Bah! Seventh Generation TP is not bad at all. However, I will say that their paper towels are too scratchy.

Trader Joes's Bath Tissue has no chlorine, is 100% recycled (10%-15% Post-consumer) and comes in pretty cheap packs. I think it feels soft enough.
If you buy tissue that is too soft, you end up needing more tissue to wipe off the tissue that just fell apart while wiping. You could be there all day.

Yet another reason why I wish I had a Trader Joe's in my city!

Me too -- they're finally putting on in Austin...on the other end of town. I'm sure just by driving back and forth I'd do more damage than I'd avert by buying the Trader Joe's TP in the first place.
Sigh.

I've used the Green Forest brand for years and have no complaints. It's a clear step above 7th generation, and usually cheaper to boot. 100% recycled paper, 40% post-consumer.

Oh come on ... it's green and cheap. It's just your bum, after all! ;)
I recently blogged about Seventh Generation's paper-wrapped rolls, which I buy, and confirmed with the company that the paper-wrapped one-ply rolls (for us masochists) use no plastic in packaging, even in transit. What's not to like?

Ok, maybe I can keep the Seventh Generation out but keep a small stash of the cushy stuff for special occasions.

I've used seventh generation for about 6 months and have no complaints. Don't know what the fuss is about.

We really like the Seventh Generation TP and don't find it too scratchy at all. Our local grocery store only carries the questionable Green Forest, which is so soft it falls apart and a roll runs out almost as soon as it's begun. We order the Seventh Generation in bulk from Amazon; if you use their Subscribe service you can get an additional discount.
Now I didn't care for the Seventh Generation paper towels; they were not very absorbent. Seems to be a mixed-bag.

Then there's also the European bidet of course, which requires no paper, but some water. I guess regional decisions might be appropriate...?

I don't need the aloe enhanced, triple-ply toilet paper. I don't even need my toilet paper to be white. I've used--I swear to you-- corn husks when I had to. But chlorine bleach free is enough for me. I'm on a budget. A raw rear for the environment isn't where I'm going to show my commitment.

Most Whole Foods stores in my area carry "Purely Cotton" toilet paper...not paper at all, but made from waste cotton fibers. If you need softer, this might be what you are looking for. (You can order from their website if you can't find it locally.) I always buy their facial tissues, too.
