Electric chopper looks cool, won't wake neighbours
Picture this: a young Marlon Brando and his gang of biker thugs roll into a defenseless small town, only instead of a low throbbing rumble that screams "look out, rubes we're here to bust you up" the only sound the bikes make is a polite non-threatening hum. Not exactly the traditional biker image, but it could be the signature of the motorcycle in a post-gasoline world.
The CHP Hybrid Chopper, currently on display at the New York Auto Show, is a collaborative effort between Hybrid Technologies and Big Bear Choppers, with some assistance from the California Highway Patrol (hence the name). Beyond its Easy Rider look, the CHP Chopper has a range of about 40 miles on a charge and can do 0 – 30 mph in 5.2 seconds.
While only a prototype, the Chopper joins a number of other electric bikes and bike-like vehicles that may one day be the standard in two-wheeled mechanized transport. In the future, even the tough guys will be green.
