Jeremy Piven loans his voice to Earth Hour

In case you haven't already marked it on your calendar, Earth Hour is only 9 days away -- and that means it's time to step up the campaign to make sure everybody knows about the first global turn-everything-off hour. To get the message out, Earth Hour Organizers are trying to enlist all the star power that they can, and I think it's scoring them some pretty decent media support. Hopefully, it will be more of a success than Live Earth. The World Wildlife Fund posted this video yesterday, featuring the most intimidating voice Jeremy Piven could muster. I don't think I've ever heard him sound this serious, even as Dean Pritchard in Old School.Australian celebrities seem to be the most enthusiastic about Earth Hour -- after all, the concept was born in Sydney. In the past, Kate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman both spoke out for the project, helping last year's event get the support of giant corporations like McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and HSBC. It's been reported that last year's hour was observed by 2.2 million individuals and 2,100 businesses.

This year, the goals are much more ambitious and the torch has been passed to a whole new group of celebrity spokespersons. A bunch of iconic buildings will be going dark this year in the US, including the Sears Tower, John Hancock Building, Soldier Field, and the Golden Gate Bridge. In Canada, singer Nelly Furtado is campaigning for Earth Hour in Toronto, where she will play an carbon-neutral outdoor concert. I read on the Earth Hour website that Blue Man Group supports Earth Hour, but no word yet on a free show.

In case you're wondering, Earth Hour is supposed to take place at 8PM local time -- I was confused about that myself.
