Gardening Guide: The Apartment Farmer
How do you grow a garden when you do not have a yard, patio or balcony? Good question. The obvious answer is: it cannot be done. But answers do not always arrive in the realm of obvious.
According to The Apartment Farmer author Duane Newcomb, you do not need any of those spaces to grow herbs and vegetables. If you are looking around your apartment right now, and thinking to yourself, "I have no room to start farming indoors," Newcomb points out it only takes 10 eight-inch pots to grow:
- 80 carrots
- 40 beets
- 40 cherry tomatoes
The Apartment Farmer guides you through finding the space you did not think you had; getting started; soil, water, planting and other considerations; basic vegetables for your apartment farm; kitchen utensils needed for gardening and composting in a garbage can. Check your local library for a copy of The Apartment Farmer. Farming in an apartment is an intriguing idea and not nearly as wacky as it might sound.
