Gardening Guide: How to grow a potager garden
A potager garden of vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, raised beds, stone, bird bath, statue and hedges is a French-styled landscaped garden where form meets function. A formal example of a potager garden can be found at the Château de Villandry in France, but there is no reason you cannot design a less ostentatious and equally beautiful geometrically-shaped potager garden of your own. There are no rules to the type of vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and hedges to include in a potager garden. With an artistic eye, the design can reflect your creativity. Think vertical and horizontal when you design your very own potager garden. Corn, tomato and beans add height. Low-growing plants and herbs edge the garden beds. The following is not an all inclusive list and you might discover favorites not on the list. Each year, try adding a new vegetable, herb and flower to the potager garden.
Vegetables: Corn, tomato, bush beans, pole beans, beets, onion, bell peppers, cabbage, carrots, celery, leeks, pumpkin, cucumbers, eggplant, hot peppers, lettuce, peas, potato, spinach, squash, and strawberries.
Herbs: basil, borage, catnip, chamomile, chive, garlic, lovage, mints, oregano, rosemary, sage, summer savory, tarragon and thyme.
Edible Flowers: Carnation, chamomile, daisies, dandelions, jasmine, pansies, pot marigold, nasturtium, chrysanthemum, roses and sunflowers.
