Gardening Guide: Companion planting for garden growing success
Some plants make good neighbors and encourage the growth of plants next to them, while others should be kept far apart for the harmony of the garden. Tomatoes are happy next to pot marigolds, nasturtium, parsley, carrots celery and onions. Tomatoes get mopey and fail to thrive next to dill, fennel, and cabbage.
Pole beans will reach to the sky in happy growth next to summer savory, corn, and radish while beets, kohlrabi, onions and sunflowers put beans in a funk. Then there are good natured vegetables who do not look for trouble and are not prone to being fussy about the vegetable next to them. Everyone appreciates those than know how to be easy going.
Companion planting is just that -- planting vegetables next to other vegetables that will benefit their growth. In the gallery that follows, we have paired up vegetable friends.
