Forecasters at San Francisco's NBC affiliate are predicting a windy future for their station, now that
100% of their energy will come from wind farms. Sort of. While the station won't have turbines protruding from its own roof, the San Francisco station has purchased enough offsets to make it's block the virtual equivalent of a wind farm. So -- at least in theory -- this marks a first time a US television station will be powered completely by wind energy, a feat that comes as part of the station's "EcoLogic" campaign.
"This is not a hollow marketing tactic. We are taking a very frank appraisal of our carbon footprint, and will take our viewers through the process as we make changes and improvements to our building and our lives," said NBC 11's President Richard Cerussi.
Marketing tactic or not, the station's green campaign won't end with the wind-offset program. The EcoLogic has been in effect since the start of the year. In the first 2 months, employees reduced the stations energy consumption by powering down equipment when it's not in use.
What will they think of next? The campaign will also attempt to reduce the station's impact by re-routing employee commutes and offering viewers green tips on energy conservation, recycling and landscaping practices.
