"Green consumer" an oxymoron
Monica Hesse chronicles the "Green Consumer" this week, in Greed in the Name of Green, in the Washington Post. We've heard this before, all about the stereotypical "green consumer" who has to tell you about all of their green purchases and of course, uses green as an excuse to replace all non-green things, like polyester and plastic. And gasp, then they might even do things like fly on a plane to exotic destinations. As Paul Hawken of Smith & Hawken says, "The phrase itself (green consumer) is an oxymoron."
Replacing perfectly good countertops or clothes just because they aren't eco-hip is not green. But when the day comes when you do have to replace, searching for an eco-friendly choice is a good thing, including looking for used stuff.
The truth remains, not buying is the greenest choice of all.
