UN food aid may be rationed due to cost
The BBC reports that the UN World Food Aid program may have resort to rationing due to skyrocketing food costs.
The price of basic foodstuffs is rising rapidly around the globe, caused by a combination of factors like growing populations, changing diets, and diversion of food crops for biofuels. Hardest hit are developing countries, where people already having trouble affording food have seen price increases of 40% in the last year, and will likely face further hikes of 50% this year.
Josette Sheeran, program director, said that even relatively affluent countries such as Egypt and Pakistan are reintroducing or expanding food rationing.
Besides the immediate need to keep people fed, grain shortages can leave farmers with no seed for next year's crop, compounding the problem.
The looming crisis means that World Food Aid program desperately needs more donors to help to make up the shortfall. Want to help out? Here's where you can go to donate - all you need is a credit card or a bank account.
