Stop & Shop, the beloved supermarket chain of my New England youth, is recognized as an Energy Star leader by the EPA-the only supermarket chain in the country to earn this designation in 2007. The efforts Stop & Shop has made include the building of a store in Kennebunk, ME, which will offset all of its energy use with renewable energy certificates. Depending on what you think of carbon indulgences, um, offsets, you might think this is a good thing, or you might think it's greenwashing; however, S&S has also made many efficiency improvements in their stores, to the lighting, refrigeration, and roofing.
