Anyone who shops in the average American supermarket is probably aware of the totally out-of-control amount of packaging on all sorts of things. According to a recent Nielsen survey, wasteful food packaging is one of the fastest-growing environmental concerns for shoppers around the world, with New Zealanders being most concerned.People in the Thailand and Japan were least willing to give up packaging, BUT they often bought fresh food from markets that didn't require a lot of packaging.
And yes, Europeans and North Americans were those least prepared to give up packaging meant to ensure hygiene.
Here are some tips to reduce the amount of food packaging you bring home
- When practical, buy in bulk.
- Avoid single-serving packages when possible.
- Choose recyclable packaging when possible.
