Hellmann's goes free range
It's hard to start a post about Hellmann's without Brautigan's Trout Fishing in America popping into my mind. In his book, Brautigan made a special effort to end the final chapter with the word, "mayonnaise." I can't say that Brautigan would particularly care if the eggs in this condiment were free range or not (doubtful), but Hellmann's UK division has responded to consumer requests to better the living conditions for egg-laying hens by converting to the use of free range eggs by July, 2008.Around 200,000 hens will now get a glimpse of daylight thanks to recent celebrity campaigns demanding that companies use more bird friendly farms for their ingredients. No news yet as to when we'll see a change here in the states.
Of course, if you'd rather stay away from commercial mayo, you can always make your own. It's easier than you think and it will taste better than anything from a jar.
