Plastic debris in middle of Pacific grows to twice the size of the U.S.

A "plastic soup" of waste the size of twice the U.S. is floating in the Pacific Ocean...and is growing, according to an article in the Independent.

The garbage is held in place by underwater currents and is located 500 nautical miles off of California, past Hawaii and almost to Japan. About one-fifth of the junk is thrown off of ships or oil platforms, the rest comes from land. Sailors have learned to just avoid it.

According to the U.N. Environment Program, plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million birds each year as well as 100,000 sea mammals. The plastic also attracts hydrocarbons and DDT, eventually ending up in the food chain, and humans' dinner plates.
