Live green like Lost: Die an eco-friendly death
People die on the island -- a lot. And if the producers are telling the truth, the carnage isn't over yet. Sometimes formerly irritating but suddenly heroic musicians from Manchester die saving the rest of the survivors, and sometimes Nikki and Paolo suffer unthinkably horrible fates amidst whoops and cheers from Lost fans everywhere. (I can't believe her eyes popped open right at the end of the episode -- creepy!)But regardless of how they go, their remains are dealt with in the same way. The deceased are buried, without a casket, and left to naturally decompose. These "green burials" are becoming popular in real life too. If you opt to die like your favorite Lostie, your body will not only enrich the land, but it won't become part of a cemetery. Cemeteries put 30 million feet of hardwood, 104,272 tons of steel and 1.6 million tons of reinforced concrete into the ground every year -- not to mention the dangerous chemicals that are used to coat caskets.
