All about composting toilets
Rebecca Hillman, on her blog Irish Sally Garden, talks about her newfound appreciation for composting toilets. What is a composting toilet? According to Hillman, it's not just a hole in the ground, but a toilet where the decomposition process is performed aerobically (with microbes that use air). Bulking agents are also thrown in, such as sawdust or shredded paper. The final composted contents can be used as fertilizer in the garden, but only after one is certain that it is composted thoroughly.

There are hazards to composting toilets however, for, er, obvious reasons. For more on that see here.
