Insulate the opening to your attic

Attics are huge energy suckers, whether you live in a warm or a cold climate. In the winter, they are generally unheated and can let out a lot of your heat. In the summer they are super hot. Many attics are accessed through a folding access stair, and are often poorly insulated from the rest of the house.

Your folding attic stair opening is one of the things you'll definitely want to look at if you're trying to make your home more energy efficient. Try a DraftCap from Atticap or PINKcap from Owens Corning.

In either case, these caps are either white or pink foam polystyrene boxes that you put above the folding stair opening. It's light enough that it won't block your entry into the attic. The prices I have seen run around $75 to $100.
