GreenBaby: How to create a green nursery for baby
Whatever you do, avoid these wasteful baby products.
Congratulations! You are having a baby and deciding how to decorate the nursery. A newborn will spend about 16 hours a day in the nursery. From floor to ceiling, here is what every new parent needs to know:Flooring: Choose bare wood, cork, bamboo or linoleum flooring with natural fiber throw rugs or natural wool carpeting installed without chemical adhesives.
Walls: If you live in an older home and the paint is chipping or you plan on sanding before adding a fresh coat of paint, check for lead. If the walls are in good shape, do not disturb the paint already on the walls. When painting, choose a water-based low-fume, non-volatile organic compound (VOC) paint formulated with natural pigments.
Crib and nursery furniture: Choose solid natural wood crib and furniture. Furniture manufactured with particleboard, hardwood, plywood and fiberboard can contain formaldehyde and other chemicals.
Crib mattress and bedding: Choose an untreated natural mattress made of organic cotton and wool. Wool acts as a flame retardant without the need for chemicals.
Window treatments: Choose natural organic fiber curtains or blinds made from bamboo or natural untreated wood.
In addition, consider a room air purifier. When cleaning the nursery and home, choose non-toxic cleaning products.
