Operation Greenbrew: Brooklyn Brewery
In our efforts to green our beer consumption, we stumbled on a brewery based out of an old Matzo ball factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The founder of Brooklyn Brewery, Steve Hindi, is an eco-savvy beer tycoon who believes in a business backed by strong unwavering principles.
That's why his brewery runs on 100% sustainable wind power. If you're in New York, don't look outside your window expecting to see giant windmills in the middle of Williamsburg -- Hindi's brewery buys power from a wind farm in upstate New York. By investing in the wind farm, Brooklyn Brewery is boosting demand for alternative energy as well as reducing it's emissions by 335 pounds of CO2.
Brooklyn Brewery also has a system in place to reuse its organic waste. All the grains and husks leftover after the brewing process are picked up by farmers, who are paid to haul the grain away. The farmers, in turn, feed the grain to their livestock and everyone's happy.
