GreenTech at CES: Prototype fuel cell for cellphones and PDAs
Hydrogen fuel cell technology may be the wave of the future, but if we can learn anything from Horizon Fuel Cell's portable fuel cell prototype it's this: the future is not here yet.
Horizon is demonstrating that it is indeed possible to create a small fuel cell that's capable of powering devices like cellphones, PDAs, video game systems, or even laptops. But the company has yet to really make an affordable product. in this small form factor. The closest they've come is the HydroPak, which Horizon hopes to sell for $400 per unit. If that sounds like a lot of money for 4-pound battery replacement that provides just enough energy to power your computer and a few other gadgets, it gets worse. Each 270Wh refill cartridge costs $20 and provides about 14 hours or use.
There are no real plans to develop a miniature HydroPak for portable gadgets right now, but Horizon is showing off a prototype at CES to gauge consumer interest. I don't know about you, but I'm interested... just not interested enough to spend that kind of money when rechargeable batteries are so cheap.
