How to buy minimally packaged food.

Get your groceries home, and it becomes clear the amount of packaging that goes into each product is redundant. For example, there is usually a bag inside a box -- and the box is two sizes bigger than it needs to be for the volume of food contained within the bag. In making greener choices:
- Look for the bulk bins. Many staple foods, like flour, spices, and cereals can be bought in bulk.
- Instead of buying packaged pouches, make your own batch of taco seasoning mix, hot cocoa mix, or dry soup mixes and keep in airtight containers. Most recipes can be found with a quick search online.
- If it is something used on a regular basis, buy in the largest possible package, and look for the product with the least amount of packaging. At least it is one bag inside one box, instead of two or more smaller boxes.
And last, refuse to buy the most obvious product packaging offenders. Eventually, the market will adjust to demand and find ways to minimize the amount of packaging used for a product.
