Raw horse sushi, anyone?
Like many American cities, mine has a large population of sushi joints and it it is growing. America has a healthy demand for Japanese cuisine but it comes at a severe cost. The supply of bluefin tuna, a common ingredient in sushi and sashimi, is being depleted, driving up tuna prices across the globe. In a response to the crisis, several countries agreed to limit tuna fishing in the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans by 20%. This may have helped the tuna population somewhat but has increased the price of sushi making it difficult for the Japanese to afford a staple of their diet. To combat the problem, Japanese chefs have been experimenting with sushi roll variations including the use of raw horse and deer meat. Yum.

Apparently tuna is a large part of the Japanese diet. Large enough that the rising price is causing a bit of a panic.
