5 things to do with old baby clothes

Your precious little one will go through at least four sizes of clothing during their first year of life. Some outfits will only be worn once or twice and other favorites will be stained an unrepresentable by the time your baby grows out of them. So what do you do with all of those leftover onesies?

  1. Make a memory quilt. Baby stains are usually on the front of the outfit leaving a big swatch of pristine fabric in the back. Quilts can be made with any size of scrap fabric and there are plenty of resources online for patterns and directions. Baby blankets can also be incorporated into the project leaving you a beautiful homemade quilt as a keepsake of the early days. If you aren't very crafty, there are folks online that will turn your clothes into a quilt for a fee.
  2. Use around the house. Old baby clothes are great for dressing dolls. They can also be turned into rags or stuffed with batting to make lovies.
  3. Make some cash. Bring the clothes to a consignment store or set up shop on eBay. Sell designer outfits individually and group others together by size to sell as a lot. This option is best for clothes that show little wear.
  4. Pack them away. It is a common complaint of younger siblings everywhere that all they get are hand-me-downs but it's economical and earth friendly to save the clothes from number one and pass them along -- especially if the two children are the same sex. Besides, you won't hear too many complaints from a four-month-old about what's in their closet. If you aren't planning on any more children, you can pass them along to someone who is.
  5. Donate. Goodwill, women's shelters and other charities all are glad to take baby clothes off your hands. Plus, a donation of clothes can earn you a tax write-off if you get a receipt. Clothes that are not fit for selling are usually sold to textile recycling firms that recycle the clothes into rags, insulation or other industrial fabrics.
