Ad agency JWT says blue will be the new green
Is Al Gore the bluest man on earth? Advertising firm JWT predicts that one of the top trends of 2008 will see blue replacing green as the color of environmentalism, social conscience, and all-round niceness. JWT notes that blue is the color of the sea and the sky, making it easier for people to identify it with the current hot-button issue of climate change.
Luckily for JWT, the shift will give agencies and other captains of consumerism a chance to "develop big brand ideas", so look for companies like Nike and McDonald's to suddenly get the blues, while Levis and Labatt ride their traditional association with "blue" all the way to the eco-bank. For 2009, I predict that the color coding will go still further, with different schools of environmentalists taking their cue from credit card marketers and branding themselves as gold, platinum, or black treehuggers. Buy your t-shirts now and avoid the rush.

Yeah, but green is associated with trees, grass, and everything "organic" that people are concerned with. I dunno if blue will really replace green or not - I'd be surprised if it did.

Just a tired old agency out of fresh ideas and trying to take over the green brigade. FAT CHANCE JWT...get you creative minds around green. What happens when you destroy a nice green habitat...If you listen to JWT, it will turn blue.

I agree, Ad Agencies will try any angle to pull a dollar. In this case, I agree with Lyn from www.ecobites.com that JWT is devoid of fresh ideas and are trying to re-invent the wheel.
I wonder if Al Bore is trying to live up to his high green ideals now that he was successful in winning the Nobel Peace prize. Did I hear he donated the large prize to the green movement or am I wrong and he purchased carbon credits in his own company.

seems like marketing gimmick from JWT to me more than anything... the first thing i'd like to point out is that they list it as a "trend". since when was being a responsible global citizen a trend? in searching for other people, i read a great article from another agency where they try to take it away from the whole color, trend, or anything... they jokingly call it "transparent" meaning...just call it what it is: be socially responsible with your business and be honest about it.
here's the article:

thoughts anyone?

you're most likely correct.
however, it's only a matter of time before the green frenzy evolves in to a larger social awareness that encompasses more than just the environment. while the color idea may be hokey, the shift is an interesting one.

Like everything else, change means more money for all. Styles change even more quickly, to keep money flowing for designers and clothing makers, etc.
Consumers ultimately choose what they like and our choices can make or break what is out there.
Classic colors and designs are always in style.
Trendy stuff doesnot last....
Personally, I like to mix blue and green. What a concept!
