A bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide is a great thing to have around the house. It's an inexpensive, earth friendly alternative to a great number of toxic substances you might use daily.
Patricia already covered hydrogen peroxide's disinfectant qualities but let's see what else the stuff can do:
- Rinse your veggies. 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide in a sink full of cold water is said to rinse away pesticides and prolong freshness.
- Whiten teeth. Mix 50% hydrogen peroxide with 50% water and swish around in your mouth for a few minutes as a mouthwash. This will not only whiten teeth but help to heal mouth infections.
- Bleach alternative. Using hydrogen peroxide in your laundry instead of bleach will whiten clothes. Keep a spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide near your washing machine as an alternative stain remover.
- Go blond. You can spray hydrogen peroxide directly to your hair or mix with lemon juice for summer highlights.
- First aid. The high concentration of oxygen kills bacteria as it is applied to minor cuts and scrapes. The real fun comes in watching the foam materialize the moment the hydrogen peroxide hits the cut. This provided a great deal of entertainment for me during mandatory quiet time at summer camp many years ago.
