Tips for buying eco-friendly candles

In case you're doing some last minute shopping today and candles are on your list, here are some pointers for buying eco-friendly ones from Stacy Downs:

  • Try soy or beeswax and look for ones that are either 100 percent or a mixture of the two. Palm oil is another natural ingredient you might see.
  • Soy and beeswax tend to more expensive than the petroleum-derived paraffin.
  • Make sure you buy candles with all-cotton wicks. While lead-core wicks are banned, it is occasionally found in the wicks of imported candles. If you find a metal core in the wick, don't worry, it is probably zinc or tin.
