It's that time of year when dealing with ice and snow on your car and driveway is almost a daily chore for some of us -- I know where I live in the Midwest we've already had 9 inches of snow plus a whopper of an ice storm. But throwing salt down and using chemical de-icers is not only bad for the environment, but it's unhealthy for you and your family. Unfortunately, the single most Earth-friendly way to de-ice your car and your driveway is to manually scrape and scoop the white stuff away. But aside from that
there are some natural alternatives to the usual loads of salt or harmful chemical products like "Driveway Heat."
- Put 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water in your windshield wiper tank and use that to help dissolve ice.
- Coat your windshield with the vinegar/water mixture to help prevent ice buildup in the first place.
- Cover your windshield overnight with a cloth or rug scrap before snow or ice is expected.
- Pour lukewarm (not hot) water over your windshield before scraping.
- Pay somebody to shovel your driveway and clear your car.
- Use a less harmful chemical product like SafePaw or Cryotech E36.
