Sustainable wines: what you need to know
Physicians say that drinking a glass of wine everyday is healthy. Now, with the availability of sustainable wines at your local market, there's just no excuse to be a teetotaler anymore. Wineries across the country are lessening their impact on the environment by conserving water, using alternative energy, and in some cases even producing electricity with their refuse.
Since sustainability is not a certified practice, as it is with products labeled USDA organic, a wine marketed as sustainable doesn't have to meet any certain criteria. That said, some guy's idea of sustainability could be distributing his product in a hybrid Escalade. So, it's probably best to check a company's website to see what they define as "sustainable" -- like this one.
How might you find one of these sustainably-produced wines? Some stores have gone to special labels for wines that are produced in an eco-friendly way, or placing them in displays together. If not, it never hurts to ask your grocer to point out some green options.
