The "Green Grinch"
The New York Times profiles the new Green Grinch, the relative that insists on spreading the message of green through the holidays.Take for example, Donna Hoffman of Austin, Texas, who gave each of her relatives a compact fluorescent light bulb for the holidays. Hoffman especially wanted to make a point to her sister, who works for a construction company that builds a lot of "nasty, old-style, fossil fuel-related stuff." Word is, the sister took it ok and ended up replacing all of her home's bulbs.
I think "green gifts" are great in lieu of conventional gifts if you know that the recipient is already trying to make changes. A sleek stainless steel reusable mug, a few reusable bags, some dish cloths or cloth napkins, a basket of green cleaning supplies would all make great gifts in the right context.
BUT, they could come off as super preachy and judgmental otherwise. If you must give 'green,' to others that haven't expressed an interest, I personally would stick with items that aren't preachy but still relatively eco-friendly like food gifts or tickets to an event.
What do you think?
