Make your own wallet with a used Tyvek mailer

When I was in high school, it was all the rage to make your own accessories using layer upon layer of duct tape. These days, folks have realized that using petroleum-based duct tape in that manner is not the best way to go. However, the do-it-yourself, creative streak cannot be denied, especially when it comes to those clever kids over at Instructables. They've devised a way of folding a single 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper (or a used Tyvek mailer) into a wallet, complete with cash pocket and room for up to 8 credit cards. I think it's a pretty cool way to reuse something and avoid needing to buy a new wallet.

This is awesome! The funny thing is if enough people see this it could become a trend like the duct tape wallets.

Tyvek is a brand of flashspun high-density polyethylene fibers, a synthetic material; the name is a registered trademark of the DuPont Company. (from wikipedia)
Why this material would be any better than Duct tape is beyond me. At least it seems to be using LESS petroleum based material. That is good.
Duct tape or Tyvek, the idea of making something yourself is great. Since you are the manufacturer, you can fix it again if it breaks or wears out. And hopefully this does not turn into some dumb short-lived trend where millions participate and then throw away the wallets after the novelty has worn off to follow the next fashion-trend.
Now, what is wrong with wallet made from vegetable (not chrome) tanned leather? It grows and is completely biodegradable. Even compostable. Fix it when it begins to come apart. You can get kits for making your own. Just make sure to keep it for a looooong time, since leather is the skin of an animal and the raising of animals for food is a rather inefficient affair. 10 years should be doable.
And if you really object to using ANY animal product, I am sure there are ways for making wallets from plant fibers. Of course some bugs where probably killed while making that fiber.
Why can't it be just easy and straight forward like in the past? It is all so connected and difficult! Ignorance sure was bliss.
