Tip of the Day: Buy Nothing Day

"Black Friday" is coming up next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. The day we are all supposed to go out and shop ourselves silly for the upcoming holiday season.
Well, this year, why not try to participate in "Buy Nothing Day"? Kalle Lasn, co-founder of Adbusters, says that most participants see the day as simply a way to make a mindful escape from the incessant marketing and consumerism that pervades our society. "So much emphasis," Lasn notes, "has been placed on buying carbon offsets and compact fluorescent lightbulbs and hybrid cars that we are losing sight of the core cause of our environmental problems: we consume far too much."
So this year, enjoy the day off, shopping-free. Bundle up, go for a walk, and be thankful for this beautiful planet that we all get to live on.
