Tip of the Day: Have a happy and sustainable Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is a week from today and most people are starting to plan their menus and may even be beginning to do their grocery shopping. Here are few tips on ways to keep your holiday celebration green and sustainable.
- Save your plastic produce bags and when the meal is over, use them to cover bowls and store rolls instead of reaching for the plastic wrap and zip top bags.
- Before you shop, carefully consider how many guests you will be having, as well as your capacity for leftovers and purchase accordingly. Literal tons of food are wasted around the holidays, a practice that isn't particularly green.
- Think before you buy that bakery pie, neatly housed in it's non-recyclable plastic container. Making your own pies at home means you can control what goes into them and you won't have as much waste at the end.
- When you come to the end of your turkey, turn the bones into stock. You can use turkey stock just as you would chicken and it freezes beautifully.
- Send leftovers home with your guests in old quart-sized yogurt containers instead of buying new disposal plastic ware for the job.
- If you must use disposal plates and utensils, consider getting the new compostable ones that are currently on the market instead of styrofoam and plastic.
- Thanksgiving is a good time to invest in new cloth napkins that you can then use for the rest of the year.
