Are vegetarians less attractive?
As you're probably aware, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is obsessed with linking vegetarianism and sex. Their campaigns are like 1990s beer commercials -- insinuating that by drinking Budweiser dropping meat from your diet that you look like their uber-sexy, mostly-naked supermodel spokesperson.
So it's not surprising that they held a contest for Europe's Sexiest Vegetarian. But take look at the winners (or view the gallery below) -- what gives? Sure, they're OK looking, and their choice to abstain from meat means they're not contributing to factory farming, and thus reducing their carbon footprint -- which is awesome. However, if these are the two sexiest people the European vegetarian community has to offer, what does that say about vegetarians in general?
Unsure? Take a look at the rest of the "finalists." It seems that a) consuming meat makes you more attractive, b) the best looking people don't love animals enough to stop eating them, or c) PETA didn't try very hard with this contest.
Again, going veggie is great -- for you, the world's bovine population, and (most importantly) the planet. But, if this contest is any indication, don't be surprised if your meat-free lifestyle has a negative effect on your sex life. Then again, when you look at this list of sexy celebrity vegetarians, it's a different story. In any case, here's the rest of the PETA finalists.

Your correlation is off. It's british people who are ugly, not vegetarians.

I don't understand why everyone is so worried about looks...The world would be better without that pathetic and immature obsession.

Wow, I was surprised to see so many attractive contestants after reading your article. Whether or not you're a vegetarian or care for PETA do you really think it was helpful to make this empty and hurtful connection? I found it a juvenile and low act and I'm not even a vegetarian.

You must be looking at different pictures because all of the ladies are healthy-looking and beautiful. Just because they are not anorexic skeletons with botoxed foreheads and silicon implants and other surgical alterations doesn't mean they aren't sexy. Some of the guys look like the typical noveau hippy, but everyone looks healthy which is the POINT. Vegetarianism/Veganism=HEALTH!
You must not know what natural beauty looks like if you don't find any of these folks attractive. Stop getting your idea of beauty from magazines, television, and movies and get out in the world and meet real-life beautiful people.

I was interested in this article just to see if it would have any truth behind it.
Yet, there seemed to be nothing except hurtful opinions on your behalf.
I looked back onto the contestants, and yes there were some who were not as attractive. However, the majority of the contestants were rather stunning or handsome.
So, honestly either you wanted to instigate out of ignorance or you have a poor idea of beauty.

Wow! Apparently, you don't even need to be a real writer anymore to submit so-called news stories. Nice! Where's my blog!? I want in.

I am a former vegan, now a meat and potatoes guy, In my humble opinion diet had nothing unless you eat to much or allot of junk food, what you eat has nothing to do with sexiness. It was just probably a jokey contest, don't take everything so seriously.

I think this contest might have been a "nominate yourself" type contest, and they made the best of that. AND as you can tell by the list of all the contestants that it was a vote that the people who went to the website voted on. Maybe it just shows that all the attractive vegetarians had better crap to do than enter themselves in an online beauty contest.

im confussed? i thought those woman were pretty. This article was pretty negative. Peta picks and uses supermodels,Pam anderson ect..and the "go naked" campaign as one of there marketing tools. It attracts men and courious people that never even heard about PETA or wouldn't normally check out PETA.I think it works. They first time I heard about PETA was when i saw the models naked in the nyc window promoting the "no fur" campaign. and Im a straight woman!

I have been a vegetarian for twenty years. Being healthy in an age where too many people suffering from obesity, diabetes and heart disease is more important than having barbie doll looks ala Botox. In addition I am doing my bit for animals, the enviornment and the worlds food supply. I realize this may not be appropriate for everyone but we all need to make decisions to improve the quality of life for all . This is my contribution. Jim

So natural beauty doesn't appeal to you I guess. Even the hot almost naked winner does nothing for you? This has to be as shallow and idiotic as you can get, not to mention not about living green.

I know a lot of vegans that are hot, but you have to admit that a lot of them have that weird vegan skin that you can get from not getting the right kinds of proteins. Before anyone writes saying angry things, I know that if you supplement properly it isn't an issue. Still some people must not know, half vegan the women at my local Wild Oats market have mild skin problems.

So this girl is gross, huh? http://www.greendaily.com/photos/etas-2007-europes-sexiest-vegetarian-contest-women/491357/
I thought so too. I mean, no way would she ever get a date.
This is really a ridiculous thing to say. Rather than phrase it as "vegetarians are less attractive" why not say "these people shouldn't have won"? Both are equally untrue. Of course, it wouldn't be so sensational if you had labeled it the second way...
