Tip of the Day: Create a plan for the holidays
No matter what winter holiday you celebrate, the world seems to get crazy this time of year. It is so easy to get sucked into a spending and activity whirlwind, which can be fun, but all of the festivities can quickly morph into a source of stress, leaving you overextended, in terms of both time and finances. Take a few moments now and come up with your holiday season plan. Write down the list of the things that are important to you and define the holiday. Your list could look like this: Decorate home, buy or make specific gifts, send holiday cards, attend holiday music event, bake cookies, host a holiday dinner. (Or, make reservations for week-long getaway.) Attach a budget to this list also. Try to do as many of the preparations in advance as possible.
Then, as unexpected invitations and gift ideas pop up, refer back to your list. If the event or purchase is not on the list, question if it is really that important to you. If not, then just say "No, thank you." Go easy on yourself, your wallet and the earth.
