Tip of the day: Daylighting your house can save money, bring in the sun
Want to light your house without flipping a switch?
While I'd never heard the term "daylighting" before, but my dining room, with its cascade of bay windows, is the cheeriest, brightest, warmest room in the house because of all that light.
The Daylighting Collaborative can tell you more about why filling your house with natural light saves money, and energy -- and why it doesn't mean you have to live in something made entirely from glass.
Anyone who's built a passive solar house will find the list of 10 daylighting myths debunked somewhat familiar. Here's a few of those myths that I found particularly surprising:
- Daylighting is expensive
- It causes glare in your house
- It lets in too much heat.
Apparently none of those statements are true!
As the days grow colder and shorter, I find that my dining room really does become a refuge, a kind of outside-in space that lifts my spirits. Maybe there's some formal daylighting ahead for me -- or for you!
