What's the best choice for buying milk, paper or plastic?

The best choice, based on least energy consumed in production, shipping, cleaning, recycling and landfilling, is refillable glass bottles, according to The Green Guide.

However, milk in refillable glass bottles can be hard-to-find. So if refilllable glass is out, the next best choice is recyclable plastic, as long as you recycle it. Paperboard cartons come next and single-use glass is the worst option.

Here is a list of local dairies that offer milk in glass bottles. You'll have to check though if the dairy will accept the glass bottle back for reuse or if they recommend that you recycle it through your own community's programs. Either way, you might find some yummy and healthful products!
