Yet another electric car that could be a spaceship

Mitsubish's i-MiEV concept vehicle is great in lots of ways. Not only can the car go for 124 miles on a full charge, but the batteries are supplemented with energy harnessed by a rooftop solar panel, regenerative brakes, and a power-generating fan. This kind of forward-thinking is what may eventually make electric vehicles feasible as more than town cars -- awesome!

But why do automakers insist on creating interiors that look like Next Generation-era Star Trek shuttles? I half expect Wesley Crusher to show up in the spy photos, all decked out in his Starfleet uniform, ready to invade some planet of hapless aliens.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to drive an electric car -- especially as the vast majority of my driving is within a 10-mile radius of my house. And I understand that many of the choices made when designing the exterior of the i-Miev were to create a more aerodynamic vehicle. Regardless, I'd still rather drive a car than some space pod.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

To see more of the i-Miev, check out this great gallery on AutoblogGreen, or this very informative video.
