Tip of the Day: Green up your kitty litter

Your cat wants to be a responsible citizen of the earth too, right after he takes one more nap.
One place you can start is his kitty litter. Most cat litters are made from a clay called sodium bentonite. According to this article on GreenLivingTips, this clay is obtained through strip mining where the top layer of the earth is ripped off to get to the clay layer, which is actually quite thin. Strip mining has wiped out thousands of acres of land around the world. Kind of seems like a lot of work, not to mention destruction, just so your cat can use the powder room. After that, the used clay cat litter sits in landfills forever.
So what are your options? You could train your cat to use the toilet. How cool would that be?
Or you could switch to a more earth-friendly litter. Some popular brands are:
- Swheat Scoop, made from wheat, biodegradable, composable, sewer and septic safe.
- World's Best Cat Litter, made from corn, also sewer and septic-safe, biodegradable
- Yesterday's News, made from recycled newspapers
