The diaper debate
The diaper debate can seem clearcut, with the cloth diaper side usually winning, at least in terms of environmental costs.Well, like most things in life, it's actually a lot more complicated, according to a recent article on Green Living Online by Joan McDougall. According to the article there are plenty of diapers that have the convenience of disposables with some added eco-friendly features, including chlorine-free disposables and gDiapers, which offers a cloth outer liner to be used with flushable liners.
When it comes down to it though, according to a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, the final decision on which is better for the earth depends on the specific environmental issues in your community. If your community has landfill issues, cloth might be the better choice; if your community faces water shortages, then you may doing a better deed by using disposables.
