The Segway is indeed adorable, fun, funky and cute, but not at all "human-powered." You plug it into the wall. Consequently, riders are a) still using fossil fuels (albeit considerably less) and b) not working off that good old-fashioned American obesity.

While I agree the Segway is a fossil fuel burner on a smaller scale and it prevents us from burning our own renewable resource fats, it's a great way to get places that are several miles away without 1) starting up a car, 2) relying on mass transit 3) working up a sweat through a) walking or b) cycling and 4) it's probably more managable at each destination that a bike.

I wonder how much a standard Segway costs and I wonder if I can convince my boss to buy a few for the office.

If you spend $12,000 on a Ferrari Segway, you will still be white and nerdy.

A pair of Adidas, however, is cool, and it helps burn the carbon-based fuel that would otherwise just be deposited in one's gut. Nike, Puma, and New Balance probably work just as well...
