Automatically turn your PC off in the middle of the night

Auto ShutdownYou want to save energy around the house. But you also want to schedule your PC to backup your hard drive at 2 in the morning, or to finish downloading the latest episode of Heroes from Amazon while you sleep. Fortunately, you don't have to choose. Here are two tools that will let you leave your PC on after you go to bed without leaving it on all night.

Winoff

WinOff lets you schedule your PC to shutdown, reboot, sleep, or hibernate. You can set your PC to turn off at a particular time, like midnight. Or you can tell it to shutdown after a certain amount of time has passed, say 30 minutes after you open the program. There's even an option to turn your PC off when the CPU is idle. So if you're running a CPU intensive task your computer will shutdown after it's completed.

Auto Shutdown

If the only reason you're leaving your PC on is because you need to finish downloading a large file, Auto Shutdown can help. This Firefox add-on will turn your computer off after all of your downloads are complete.
