Wal-Mart switches to concentrated laundry detergents
This is exactly the reasoning behind Wal-Mart's recent decision to replace all of the laundry detergent on their shelves with concentrate. Twenty-five percent of all laundry detergent sold in the United States is bought from Wal-Mart (yikes!). The switch will save the company transportation costs and allow more products to fit on their shelves. The company estimates that the conversion will save 125 million pounds of cardboard, 95 million pounds of plastic resin and 400 million gallons of water.
This explains why I noticed the influx of concentrates at another large retailer the other day. Detergent companies are already gearing up for the change. Hopefully this change will spark further improvements as big box stores start to look at how much they are losing due to bulky and unnecessary packaging.
