I kill just about every plant that I become the proud owner of -- and a few that have belonged to others. I have a beautiful orchid sitting in my living room that is on death watch despite my best attempts to read up on its care. In addition I have two small children and two cats. I have to be very careful about what I bring into the house because it will inevitably end up on someones mouth.
I'm giving a second look at houseplants though as they not only release fresh oxygen but
remove harmful pollutants from the air. Chemicals like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene can be found permeating through nearly every American home. Common plants such as the Gerber daisy, Peace lily, Bamboo palm and Spider plant can remove many of these toxins from the air.
After a two-year study, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America found that 15-20 of these plants in an 1800 square foot home can purify the air completely. That's a lot of carnage potential for a plant killer like me. However, if I started small with maybe one or two plants, I could definitely improve my air quality and bring a little life into the house.
