Making your backyard green and eco-friendly

If mowing your lawn infrequently is one way to help the environment, then I'm off to a brilliant start. I recently read that mowing your lawn with a gas powered mower for an hour causes as much pollution as 40 cars. That is a startling figure. I'm not sure that I'm ready to give up my lawnmower but it did get me thinking about making my backyard more environmentally friendly.

There are plenty of ways to keep your yard nutrient rich and attract birds and other wildlife. One of the most important things to keep in mind is moisture retention to cut down on your water usage. You can do this by mowing early in the day and by using mulch around plants. One other way to keep watering costs down is to use plants native to your region. Obviously planting tropical flowers in a desert climate is going to be costly and they will be difficult to maintain.
