Alternative Gift Registry from The Center for a New American Dream
The Center for a New American Dream aims to encourage people to live consciously, buy wisely and make a difference by making their voices heard. In that spirit, they've created an Alternative Gift Registry where participants can create registries of a varied composition, including "immaterial, homemade, second-hand, and environmentally-friendly gifts" for those events where material goods are usually emphasized, such as weddings and baby showers.
A sample wedding registry includes requests for recipes and cleaning tips, a reusable placemat and napkin set and a particular DVD player that is certified by Energy Star. A sample baby registry includes used baby clothes, babysitting, cassarole dinners and a variety of eco-friendly toys.
I think this is such a fabulous idea. Instead of being limited to a few stores that offer registries, you can mix and match gift ideas, including those ones that can't be purchased in stores.
